words first, then music

the libretto is the opera's script — the words the composer set. most people hear the aria but never read the text, which is like watching the third act of a film with the sound on and the subtitles off.

a great libretto is economical. it leaves room for the music to do what words can't: the repetition, the breath, the note held three seconds past comfort. mozart and da ponte rewrote each other's lines until both were irreducible.

read it like a map

before the music, scan for:

who → each name, and what they want
turn → the lie, the letter, the disguise
key line → the sentence the whole opera is about

then listen with the text in front of you. the aria will land differently — because now you know exactly what the singer is refusing to say.
