the bass is the lowest voice, roughly E2 to E4, and it is the foundation everything else leans on. a great bass doesn't just sing low — it fills the hall from the floorboards up, and it can be terrifying (the Commendatore) or tender (Sarastro) on the same night.

the basses people remember — the Russian school above all — are remembered for weight and stillness, not for speed. a bass phrase is a slow-moving thing, and that's its power.

if you're a bass

• own the chest resonance; don't fake depth by pressing down.
• work the bottom of the range daily — it's muscle.
• stillness is technique: a bass moves the room by not moving.
